Despite the omnipresence of the Pechersk Lavra on guidebook covers and postcards, no photo does justice to the true beauty of the epicentre of Kievan Orthodox Christianity, recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage alongside the Saint Sophia Cathedral. Kievans and visitors alike are equally as amazed by the beauty of its architecture each time they pass or sit on the other side of the Dnieper river as they were the first time they saw it. The Pechersk Lavra, meaning ‘cave home of high-ranking monks’ is an active cave monastry, with the majority of its many intricately decorated buildings clinging onto the cliff faced above the river. Founded in 1051, the monastry is a series of unique churches and cathedrals with onion-shaped gold domes and distinctive green roofs, bellfries and sacred chapels, all used by the around 100 residing monks today. As with most of Kiev’s orthodox church, the history is best told through the artworks and decorations both inside and outside the churches, dating back centuries. A local expert guide will accompany you on your comprehensive journey around the labyrinth of sacred sites, explaining the history and their cultural significance to this day. You will visit all the important parts of the monastary including the Great Lavra belltower, Gate Church of the Trinity, Refectory Chambers, Dorminition Cathedral, Church of the Saviour at Berestov and of course the many cliff-side caves. Naturally, given its location, the grounds of the Pechersk Lavra is a playground for the photographer, with panoramic views of the Dnieper river and surrounding monuments as well as a breathtaking cityscape. With so much to discover and atmosphere to take in, you many wish to stay long after the visit both inside the Monastary and around it, enjoying the beauty of this area, known for being one of Kiev’s most culturally and spiritually rich.
